Attendance & Tardy Policies
We feel strongly that reliable attendance is important to the success of your student.
Attendance Policy
STATE LAW REQUIRED COMPULSORY SCHOOL ATTENDANCE (RCW28A.225)
All parents, of any child between 8 and 18, must have their child attend public school (or private school or home-based instruction) and such child has the responsibility to attend school full time.
(RCW 28A.225.010)
A student is allowed 5 handwritten notes per quarter.
Definition of excused absences
- Personal illness
- Family emergencies, at principal’s discretion
- School sponsored events, counselor or administrator appointment
- Health appointments that cannot be made outside the school day; verification is needed from the medical office
- Court appointments; verification is needed from court official
- Suspension (students have the right to make up work missed)
- Prearranged absences such as recognized religious practices or events, or work.
All written notes must include:
- Students full name
- Reason for absence
- Dates of absences
- Parents name
- Contact number
*All absences or early check-outs must be followed up with a note by parent or guardian.*
A student must bring a written excuse from home within 48 hours from the date or time of the absence.
Parents will be notified in writing or by telephone on each unexcused absence. After the fifth unexcused absence a home visit will be made. The following steps may be used to eliminate the absence or reduce the absences:
- adjust school program, or course assignment
- provide more individualized or remedial instruction
- provide vocational courses or work experiences
- refer to a community truancy board
- require the child to attend another school or program
- assist parent or student to obtain supplementary services that might eliminate the underlying problem.
When a student has accumulated five unexcused absences and or not later than the tenth unexcused absence during the school year, the school district shall petition the juvenile court to assume jurisdiction for the purpose of alleging a violation of the attendance law.
The first step in the judicial system will be an appearance before a truancy board, unless the student had attendance problems in the previous year; in that case, the petition will be filed directly to the courts. Penalties for non-attendance can include up to seven days in jail and/or community service and/or the parent may be fined $25.00 a day for each unexcused absence.
Tardy Policy
Tardiness: Every student arriving late to school must check in with the office and report directly to their classroom. Students who arrive to class 5 or more minutes tardy will be marked absent by the teacher and will be required to go to class. Students who arrive more than 10 minutes late to first period will stay with security for the rest of that class period.
Checking In/Out: Students leaving campus must sign out in the office. Every student must have written or oral permission from parents to leave campus, unless they are their own guardians.
